Thus, the Boy Runs Through the Labyrinth Volume 1 Prologue

Prologue

“That’s a lie. That’s definitely a lie. What honey, you idiot?”

The boy cursed bitterly at the words that suddenly popped into his head.

Where had he heard such words? Was it when the tavern’s drunks were grumbling? Or was it when his father bought a book, never opened it, and left it for his sister to read when she was bored? He couldn’t remember.

His head was fuzzy. His throat hurt from being too dry. His whole body ached. His helmet was making him uncomfortable with sweat. He fought the urge to take off his helmet and scratch his head. Every joint in his body creaked and complained.

Rest, eat something, sleep, it begged.

But he couldn’t. He walked desperately through the dark, narrow path. The reason was clear. If he didn’t, he would die.

[GYAGYAGYA!!!]

A grotesque creature was approaching from behind. It was humanoid but small like a child, ugly with a large, squashed nose, and a single small horn on its head. It was a goblin, a type of monster, an enemy of humankind. The goblin, with its sharp, extended claws, leaped at the boy, who was dragging his feet along the path.

[GYAAAAAA!!!!]

“Shut up…!”

The sound of something being crushed came not from the boy but from the goblin.

[GY…]

As he turned, the spear in the boy’s hand—larger than a regular spear—had struck the goblin’s body.

Goblins were inherently weak, despite their evil nature. Even if the boy’s spear was crudely made and barely sharpened, a full-force blow was enough to shatter and kill it.

However,

[GYAGYAAAAA!!]

“…!”

Goblins were weak but evil and troublesome. They always moved in packs.

Two more goblins, seizing the boy’s moment of breath, pounced on him.

While dealing with one, he would be surrounded, beaten, his eyes and vital points targeted. As he flinched and writhed in pain, he would be clubbed to death—a common, tragic end for adventurers. The boy was about to meet a similar fate—but,

“I said, shut up, dammit!”

At least, it seemed he had the courage not to flinch from pain. And that saved him.

[GY!?]

A hand reached out to the goblin clawing at his skin, grabbing its neck and slamming it against the wall. With a sickening crack of breaking bones, the second goblin’s body convulsed and stopped moving.

“Take that!!!”

Then, the boy kicked the goblin that was about to smash his leg with a club it had picked up from somewhere.

[GYIIII!!!?]

The goblin, kicked away, screamed and fled. It was not fortunate that the goblin ran away. If it escaped, it might return with reinforcements.

Goblins were monsters, and monsters were the enemies of humanity. Even if they fled once, they would always come back to kill. The boy knew this. Therefore,

“Die already.”

The boy raised his spear and threw it. It wasn’t a technique; he just hurled it with all his might. The spear scraped the ground, bounced off the wall, and struck the goblin’s back.

[GYA!?]

The goblin tumbled, scraping its skin on the hard stone floor, writhing in pain and cursing. If it could speak human words, it would have said, “Damn it!” Because it was writhing in pain and anger, it didn’t notice the boy closing in from behind.

“So, just die already.”

[GAAAA!?]

With a squelch, the goblin’s head was crushed. The club it had held earlier was now used to bash its head. The boy repeated this two or three more times. For a while, the sounds of flesh being struck and blood splattering echoed in the dim corridor.

[GY…]

And then, nothing moved but the boy. After a while, the goblins’ gruesome bodies lost their form like ash blown by the wind and melted away.

Picking up the blue-violet stones left behind—the “magic stones”—the boy looked up at the ceiling and raised his voice.

“That was close… I almost died…!”

The murderous intent from earlier vanished, and now realizing how close to death he had been, he looked his age. Grimacing at the pain and the blood flowing from the cut on his cheek, he picked up the large spear he had thrown at the goblin. The spear, already shabby, had more chipped parts and looked even worse.

He compared it to the club he had used to kill the goblin. But the club already had cracks in its handle. It seemed the goblins had been using it roughly.

Sighing as the club broke under its own weight, he tossed it aside and gripped his spear again.

“When I get back, I’m never exploring a labyrinth again.”

Muttering the most bitter complaint, the boy—Ur—continued to walk.

Through the dim corridor, into the depths of the labyrinth.

Why did things end up like this?

Ur recalled. It all started when his father met a terrible end.
