Thus, the Boy Runs Through the Labyrinth Volume 1  Chapter 2 part 7

Adventurers Guild – Greed Branch Training Room Armor Storage

“Well, not that this armor is great… but it’s better than nothing.”

“How about this one?”

“Doesn’t it smell strange? What is that smell…?”

“Ur-sama, there’s a dark stain on the back of that leather armor.”

“This shield has mold growing on it.”

“It’s a cute blue-purple color, isn’t it?”

“It just looks poisonous… What were you even looking at, Diz?”

Unsurprisingly, the stored armor was in poor condition. It was better than what they had at the labyrinth mine, but the signs of the previous users’ grim fates were enough to dampen their spirits.

“Is everyone going to be okay?”

As they searched for something usable, Shizuku murmured quietly.

“You mean those guys? They’ll be fine.”

Shizuku seemed worried about the ones who had rushed ahead. Ur was exasperated by her kindness.

“They were so confident. Maybe they’ll actually do well.”

Some of them were already equipped with weapons and armor. They probably had similar experiences before joining the guild. There was a chance they might complete the task easily.

“I don’t think so.”

But Shizuku shook her head with certainty.

“Why not?”

“They seemed to underestimate the labyrinth.”

She was right. They were so focused on the rings Glen dangled before them that they underestimated the labyrinth itself. They wouldn’t have rushed out without preparation otherwise.

“I only have experience exploring the labyrinth when I fought with you, Ur-sama, but I know it’s not a place to be taken lightly.”

Ur agreed with her. He had seen many people during his travels, and those who underestimated the dangers usually met their end sooner or later.

“I think this task was designed to make them fail.”

“To break their spirits and make them more obedient?”

“Yes, so they might be having a hard time. I’m worried.”

Shizuku looked down sadly. It was true that their instructor seemed to enjoy such harsh methods, but still…

“They’ll be fine. The guild receptionist said they wouldn’t want anyone dying easily, so they must have some safety measures in place. Worry about yourself instead.”

It was kind of her to be concerned about those who fell for such an obvious trap.

“You and I don’t have the luxury to worry about others.”

He meant for her to stop worrying, but Shizuku just smiled gently at him.

“What?”

“Ur-sama, you’ve been worrying about me all along.”

“Well…”

He tried to deny it, but it was true that he had been looking out for Shizuku.

It was just a reflex to follow his foster parent’s teaching of “Do good deeds,” but belittling himself unnecessarily felt foolish.

“It was just within reach. I’d prioritize myself if it came to it.”

“Yes.”

“That knowing look on your face is a bit annoying.”

“Well…”

He gave her an unreasonable complaint, but Shizuku just kept smiling. Ur gave up and focused on finding armor. She continued searching next to him and murmured.

“I’m lucky to have met you, Ur-sama.”

“Is that so?”

After that, they worked in silence, and by the time they finished, they looked like makeshift adventurers.

Labyrinth City Greed March Street

During the Labyrinth Outbreak Era, to contain the monsters spilling from the labyrinths, many priests, their attendants, and countless knights and adventurers had gathered on this street. The vivid scenes of that time earned the street its name. It was a major thoroughfare.

“There are many shops here.”

Shizuku looked around with interest, but Ur was used to the sight. Shrewd merchants called out to them from every direction. Responding to them all would be endless.

“Hey there, first-time labyrinth challengers? I’ve got just the thing for you!”

“No thanks, we’re good. Best of luck with your business, bye.”

“Wait, wait, wait! Can’t you at least show a bit of interest?”

Ur tried to brush him off quickly, but the merchant persisted. Ignoring him seemed like an option, but Shizuku was still curious about everything around her. Reluctantly, Ur stopped and looked at the small trinket shop. The items were all adorned with spirits.

“First time in the labyrinth? How about a charm for good luck? It’s a big deal, right? Praying to the spirits is important!”

“You’re not a priest, so I doubt your goods have the spirits’ blessing…”

Holy relics with genuine spirit blessings wouldn’t be sold in shops like this. These were just charms to invoke a bit of the spirits’ mercy… but still.

“We don’t have any money. We’re broke. Find another customer.”

“Come on, you must have a little money, right?”

“All I have is three copper coins. That’s my entire fortune.”

The money from selling the magic stone from the giant boar had been spent on new shoes and other necessities. Seeing Ur’s situation, the merchant’s face fell with pity. Glad he understood, Ur turned to leave.

“Wait, wait, kid, how about this? Just one copper coin.”

“I said I don’t need anything… Is that a hair ornament?”

It was a peculiar hair ornament. Unlike the other items adorned with spirit motifs, this one was plain, with an empty circle.

“It’s supposed to hold a spirit motif in the middle, but the craftsman abandoned it halfway through. It’s unfinished.”

“Why would I buy an unfinished piece?”

“An empty seat means any spirit might choose to come and protect you, right?”

Ur was about to say, “That’s a good deal,” but the merchant’s expression showed no malice. After a moment’s thought, Ur handed over a copper coin. “Thanks! Don’t get yourself killed, kid!” the merchant said as Ur waved and headed toward Shizuku, who was wandering around.

“Oh, Ur-sama. Sorry for getting distracted—”

“Take this,”

Ur said, pressing the purchased hair ornament into Shizuku’s hands. She looked puzzled.

“Why?”

“Because it’s cute and it suits you.”

With that, Ur continued down the street. Shizuku looked at the ornament, then at Ur, and finally placed it gently in her hair before following him.

The bustling street remained lively. Shops lined both sides, people of various races mingled, and merchants called out their wares. At the end of this street was—

“…Here it is.”

In the grand plaza known as “The Jaw of Desire,” a chilling cold emanated from an ancient gate, leading to a staircase that descended deep into the earth. This was the entrance to the largest labyrinth on the Islaria continent, at the heart of the Great Sin city-state of Greed.

The Great Sin Labyrinth of Greed.

“…”

“…”

Ur and Shizuku stood silently, unable to take a step forward into the gaping darkness. Sweat formed naturally, and their feet unconsciously moved backward. Instinctively, like fearing the night, they hesitated to proceed.

But there was no turning back now.

“…Let’s go.”

Forcing his rooted feet to move, Ur took a step forward. Shizuku followed suit.

Soon, the two were swallowed by the darkness, disappearing into the labyrinth.

The Labyrinth Outbreak.

About six hundred years ago, a sudden catastrophe struck the world: the emergence of numerous labyrinths filled with demonic energy.

This disaster confined humanity to small areas protected by solar barriers. Many lives were lost as humans fought to conquer these labyrinths.

However, even centuries later, some labyrinths remained unconquered. These labyrinths are of an overwhelming scale and of a vicious nature that cannot be compared to ordinary labyrinths. These massive, malevolent labyrinths were named after human sins.

Greed, Wrath, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Vanity.

Among them, the labyrinth of Greed was particularly notorious.

“It’s huge…”

At the bottom of the long staircase, a colossal circular chamber awaited. It had no torchlight, but a faint, eerie glow of magical energy illuminated it. The ceiling was so high it made Ur feel like a dwarf.

The air was stagnant, with a sour smell and clammy humidity clinging to their skin.

“This isn’t like any labyrinth I’ve known…”

It made sense, given they were in the largest labyrinth on the Islaria continent. the Labyrinth of the Deadly Sins. It is different from a small cave turned into a labyrinth. Still, knowing didn’t make it less terrifying. Ur’s hands trembled.

“Are you scared?”

Shizuku asked, noticing his fear. Ur nodded, knowing there was no point in pretending. To his surprise, Shizuku grabbed his hand.

“What are you doing?”

“They say the warmth of human skin helps alleviate fear.”

“Not here—”

Embarrassed, Ur tried to pull his hand away, but then he noticed her hand was ice-cold and trembling.

“…Thanks, it helps,”

he said, squeezing her hand to share his warmth. Shizuku seemed a bit surprised but didn’t pull away.

“Okay.”

They released hands and faced forward. This wasn’t the time to get distracted.

Their weapons were junk, the dragon-tooth spear was barely functional, and their armor was inherited from dead adventurers. Both were amateurs. They were far from prepared but had no choice.

“Our goal is ten monsters, right…”

Their crude mission, given by Glen, was their immediate task. Kill ten monsters and collect their magic stones. That was their objective.
