Thus, the Boy Runs Through the Labyrinth Volume 1  Chapter 2 part 6

“I wonder…”

Ur responded absentmindedly to Shizuku’s question.

Honestly, the whole idea of adventurers training seriously seemed mismatched. Adventurers were more about being spontaneous. Training from scratch in a serious manner didn’t seem right! Perhaps Ur still viewed adventurers through a biased lens.

“Hey, old man, stop messing around!! No one cares about your talk!”

But just as Ur was affirming his biased view, his classmate next to him erupted. It was noisy, but Ur nodded along. That’s just how adventurers were, after all.

“I came here because they promised to hand over a ring! Hand it over! The copper ring!”

“A ring?” Ur raised an eyebrow and looked at Shizuku. Shizuku also looked puzzled.

They understood the significance of the copper ring. It was a step above the “Chalk Ring” they currently possessed—a true mark of membership in the Adventurers Guild. Could they really receive it here? But if so, why hadn’t that cheerful receptionist mentioned it?

“Maybe it’s a surprise?”

“A surprise?”

In the midst of their clueless exchange, Glenn, who was receiving boos all around, reluctantly took something out from his pocket.

Bathed in the radiant sunlight streaming through the window, it gleamed dazzlingly—it was indeed a ring. Of course, it wasn’t the “Chalk Ring” the apprentice adventurers were wearing. It shone so brightly, almost like gold, unmistakably a “Copper Ring.”

“Even though it’s the lowest ‘Copper Grade’ within the Adventurers Guild, its benefits far surpass the ‘Chalk’ you guys have. It even exempts you from ‘Urban Stay Costs.’ Just by having it.”

With those words, dissatisfaction among the trainees turned into excitement. Cash it might be, but Ur could understand their sentiment. For “Nameless,” exemption from urban stay costs alone was quite appealing. They could stay safely within the city like “Citizens.”

“So, how do we get our hands on the ring?”

As Glenn said this, everyone fell silent. His point was clearly made.

“No need to explain the rules if you guys won’t listen anyway, right? Let me explain the rules of this place.”

Saying so, Glenn raised three fingers.

“There are three ways to leave this training camp. First, drop out. You can do this anytime you want, it’s not an obligation.”

With that, he folded one finger. However, naturally, no one chose to leave right then and there.

“Second, gain my approval. Show me enough skill to convince me that you no longer need to participate in this camp. That’ll earn you graduation and a ring as a bonus.”

Glenn folded another finger.

At that moment, Ur stared intently at Glenn’s face. He realized a lot from Glenn’s thoroughly uninspired expression when he mentioned “bonus.” But the other trainees seemed not to notice his face; their gaze remained fixed on the ring. They looked like they were about to pounce at any moment.

Then Glen said his last words.

“And third, defeat me. The means don’t matter. But if you manage that, you graduate and get a ring as a bonus.”

The instant he said that, several trainees kicked their chairs away and stood up. They each held knives or blunt objects, somehow brought into the room. The man who seemed to be their leader approached Glenn and smirked.

“You’re saying we can just beat you up and get a ring without attending your study sessions?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Are there rules like it has to be a one-on-one fight or something?”

“I said, the means don’t matter.”

The moment he heard that, he gestured to his companions with a nod of his chin. Then he roared.

“Alright then! No complaints even if we beat you up right here!!!”

With that roar, the lone Glenn, who wasn’t wearing any armor, was about to be attacked with weapons raised.

“……-!”

At that moment, Ur felt a chill run down his spine. His intuition, based on experience, warned him of danger. In an instant, Ur grabbed Shizuku’s shoulder and both of them instinctively lowered their heads together.

“Wh-what’s going on!!?”

A tremendous shock reverberated throughout the room, followed immediately by screams.

“…What?”

Trembling, Ur slowly raised his head.

Just before his eyes a moment ago, the thugs who had attacked Glenn with the intent to kill had inexplicably vanished from view. Then, rocks began to fall sporadically. Ur followed the direction of the falling debris and looked up.

“……Ah, ha…”

There, hanging from the ceiling, were the thugs who had attacked Glenn. They had stuck their heads through the ceiling, their bodies almost buried into it. The pitiful sight of these thugs turning into a strange ceiling decoration was so surreal it almost circled around to being comical.

“Alright then, anyone else wanna challenge me? I’m fine with taking you all on.”

Glenn smiled cheerfully at the trainees, but no one responded to his invitation.

“…Huh?”

“Did we end up in some crazy place?”

Ur was horrified, while Shizuku muttered words that now seemed rather late.

Adventurers Guild – Greed Branch Training Camp, Day 1 of Training

The trainees gathered on the grounds had quieted down ever since the five precious sacrifices… err, dropouts had emerged. No one seemed to want to become another victim of the ceiling decor.

“Will training here make us like Glenn-sama?”

“Even if we did, wouldn’t that be bad?”

It was somewhat amusing to imagine Shizuku using his fists alone to turn those men into ceiling decor. Regardless, it was a fact that they needed to become stronger. At the very least, they needed to be able to safely delve into labyrinth—

“Alright, let’s head to the labyrinth, you bastards!”

“Wait a minute!”

Even Ur raised his hand to halt them this time.

“What? brat!”

“Is it too soon?”

They intended to gain the strength to dive into labyrinth, so what was with this sudden assault on one?

“What’s this? Aren’t there any basics, like combat training against monsters?”

“If you want to learn how to kill monsters, diving into labyrinth is the best way.”

While it was a valid argument, wasn’t it strange for the instructor to abandon his duties so suddenly?

“Get moving and make money from magical stones. I’ll exploit you at the Guild as the fee.”

“That’s crap as an excuse, it’s supposed to be free!”

Ur remembered the receptionist’s words, conditions, and stuff. That damn receptionist!.

“Ridiculous! You don’t give proper guidance! You’re just trying to squeeze every last penny out of us for the Labyrinth, right!? If that’s the case, I’ll quit the training center right now and go Labyrinth diving myself!!”

Of course, voices of dissatisfaction rose up from the others besides Ur. Even if Glenn was scary, there was a limit. Ur thought he should say more.

“Well then, how about this. I’ll give a ring to the one who gets a magic stone the fastest in this exploration.”

That’s what Ur was thinking, but as soon as Glenn finished speaking, the idiots rushed out.

“Gentlemen, you’re very fast!”

“Damn, they’re useless …… “

It was like a horse with a carrot dangling in front of its nose.

“Hey, you guys aren’t going?”

“You’re not planning to give us the rings, are you?”

“Of course not. Who would give those to a bunch of fools?”

Glen answered Ur’s question with a straight face, as if it were obvious.

“Now, get moving. The goal is ten magic stones.”

“But, we need training—”

“Swinging swords at practice dummies here won’t help at all.”

Glen spoke firmly to Ur, who looked displeased. At first, Ur thought Glen was just making things up, but his expression was serious.

“Kill monsters, absorb their magic power, and your physical abilities will turn superhuman.”

As he said this, he punched one of the practice dummies on the ground. With a tremendous crashing sound, the dummy flew across the room and shattered against the wall.

“Practicing sword swings can wait until after you’ve been in the labyrinth. Got it? Now, get going.”

Ur had no rebuttal. Being safe and certain was a misguided expectation for someone who chose the path of an adventurer.

“So, it’s time to brace ourselves and go die…”

“Ur-sama!”

Suddenly, Shizuku’s voice called out from a distance. She had wandered off at some point and was now waving from inside the training room.

“I found some armor!”

She held up some old armor. Ur wondered if it was okay to just take it, but Glen clicked his tongue in annoyance as he saw it.

“Can we use this stuff?”

Glen shrugged and nodded.

“Use whatever you want. Take it freely, just make sure to maintain and return it afterward.”

“You could’ve just told us that.”

“No one asked. Why should I explain to fools who aren’t proactive?”

“What about the others who went ahead?”

“They’ll get hurt and regret it if they can’t pay attention to their surroundings. It’s a lesson.”

Glen smirked. It seemed this instructor was not only violent but also had a nasty personality.
