Thus, the Boy Runs Through the Labyrinth Volume 1  Chapter 2 part 1

Chapter Two: Let’s Become Adventurers!

The one and only absolute Sun God, Zeuradia, shone brightly over the lands of the Islaria continent today as well.

It was the season when Spring Spirit, Spriggle, blessed all the inhabitants of Islaria. Ur was—

“…dying.”

Somehow, once again, he was on the brink of death.

This wasn’t the dangerous “outside” where monsters lurked. It was supposed to be the Great Sin City-State of Greed, protected by the divine power of the Sun God’s “Barrier of the Sun.” Yet, here he was, on the verge of death. His whole body hurt. His bones creaked. His mouth was filled with the taste of blood.

“Hey, you little brat. Snap out of it and get ready.”

A man approached Ur. His beard was scruffy and unkempt, his hair just as messy. His clothes were tattered, making him look like a weary middle-aged man.

If it weren’t for his fists and clothes being stained red with blood, that is.

“If you wanna be an adventurer, there’s no time to die. Get up and fight!”

The man raised his rock-hard fist toward Ur. The approaching punch seemed to move in slow motion, perhaps because his soul sensed imminent death.

How did it come to this?

Ur’s memories flashed before his eyes. Lately, this kind of thing was happening a lot, he thought as he stared at the approaching fist.

Small labyrinth – Exit

“…Ah, we’re outside.”

After defeating the Great Fang Boar, Ur and the others finally crawled out of the labyrinth.

Since the True Core Magic Stone was lost, the small labyrinth had lost its functionality. They wandered through the pitch-dark labyrinth for hours, only emerging when their lantern’s fuel was nearly exhausted.

“Ah, it’s so bright…”

“Praise be to the Sun God…”

Even though they were “Nameless,” who were rarely blessed by the gods, the sunlight was still appreciated. It made them feel alive. However, they couldn’t rest just yet. Their primary goal remained unachieved. But first—

“…We need to find you some clothes, or you’ll be attacked by idiots…”

“Is it noisy?”

As Shizuku said, the area had become oddly noisy.

Adventurers usually came and went from the labyrinth mine, but now they were running away without paying any attention to Ur and Shizuku.

Then, as if to replace them, warriors clad in knight armor appeared. Seeing their large shields and the crests engraved on them, Ur understood the situation.

“The Knight Order…”

They were the protectors of the city-state’s laws. Judging by the crest, they were likely from the nearby Great Sin City-State of Greed.

Their presence explained why the adventurers were fleeing in a hurry. Many of them had criminal records and wouldn’t want to face the knights.

But there was still a question. Why had the knights come all the way out here?

Wealth, magic stones, hidden treasures—Ur had a bad feeling about this.

“…What’s that? …hurts…”

“Hold on. That…”

“Ah…”

He overheard some conversation. He wanted to hear more details, but—

“Wait here. Listen to me….oh, but first, put on some clothes. They might be sweaty, though.”

Ur quickly took off his armor and draped his jacket over Shizuku. Though tattered, bloodstained, and sweaty, it was better than nothing.

“Thank you, Ur-sama.”

“Sama?”

“Is that not okay?”

“Well, it’s fine for now. Just stay put. I’ll be right back.”

With that, Ur headed towards the center of the commotion.

The first person Ur needed to find was the infamous foreman. The state of the labyrinth, the hidden warehouse, and the sudden arrival of the knights—talking to him would be the quickest way to understand everything.

“I’m not involved!! It’s not my fault!”

“It’s all that bald guy’s doing!! Please, forgive me!”

However, it seemed there wasn’t time for that. The overseers were being dragged away by the knights, screaming in protest. Ur had heard plenty of bad rumors about them, so seeing them arrested was no surprise.

But the problem was—

“Damn it! Let go of me!”

“He really got caught…”

Even the foreman Ur had negotiated with was being captured. To be honest, Ur had expected this. The gold and treasures in that hidden warehouse were clearly obtained through shady means.

But if things went this way, would the desperate negotiations be for nothing? As he pondered this, the foreman suddenly spotted him.

“That kid! He knows about the hidden treasure! It’s not me!”

He started shouting the worst possible excuse. The knights glared at Ur, and he grimaced. He’d gotten too close. The foreman should rot.

While cursing silently, Ur found himself surrounded by knights. At least they weren’t punching him outright—an unusually lenient treatment for a “Nameless,” he thought as he raised his hands.

“Wait, I’m not involved with those guys.”

He spoke calmly, trying not to appear suspicious. The knight commander stepped forward.

“Ah, don’t worry. We won’t take the words of those idiots at face value.”

“Then—”

“But we’ll need to verify, just to avoid any misunderstandings.”

The commander’s tone was gentle, but his eyes were sharp. He knew that in this world, even a child could become a monster by killing creatures and absorbing their magic.

“Understood.”

Ur complied. He was genuinely relieved he hadn’t pocketed any coins from the hidden warehouse.

“Why are you here?”

“Same as any adventurer. To earn money.”

“Can you elaborate?”

“Uh…to get my sister back.”

“Your sister?”

“She was sold here to pay off a debt.”

“They were involved in human trafficking!? That’s a serious crime under the Grand Union Law!”

The other knights were shocked, their voices filled with anger. It seemed they had decent morals, which was a refreshing change for Ur, who had been surrounded by scum.

“…Bad people are everywhere. So, can I go find my sister now?”

“Hmm…”

Ur was cautious. His sister was special, very special. It wasn’t something to share freely, even with those who upheld law and order.

“Hey, you’re back safely.”

While considering how to evade further questions, a familiar voice called out. Turning, he saw the golden-haired girl who had helped him before.

The knights saluted her, indicating her high status.

“Fenix-sama, thank you for your cooperation.”

“It’s fine. We caused trouble this time. I’m sorry.”

She accepted their salutes as if it were natural. She had helped Ur more than he realized.

The girl approached Ur. Despite his many thoughts, he had to say one thing first—

“Was it you? Thanks for the help. I owe you.”

The equipment she chose for him during the labyrinth exploration had saved his life multiple times,

despite being tattered. She was definitely a lifesaver.

“You’re welcome. But…”

For some reason, she looked a bit troubled.

“Did you say you had a sister?”

“I did. Her name is Akane…”

“Ah—”

Suddenly, something popped out from her cloak. It looked like a cat with crimson fur. This strange-colored cat leapt into Ur’s arms—

“Nii-chan!!”

And then, she spoke in a human language.

“Akane.”

[Possessed by a Spirit]

Spirits are superior beings to humans, serving as subordinates to the gods who govern the laws of this world. My sister, afflicted by the rare phenomenon of merging with a spirit, joyfully hugged Ur.

[Spirit]

A superior existence to humans. In the [Temple], humans worship and revere them, receiving blessings in return.

Everyone, be it [Priests], [Citizens], or even the nameless, venerates these sacred and supreme beings.

The phenomenon of humans merging with these spirits is called [Spirit Possession].

This phenomenon is so rare that hardly anyone knows about it. Even the [Temple], which governs the nation, is unaware of it. This means that such beings are not recognized as either humans or spirits.

In other words, they have no human rights. This is the current status of my sister, Akane.

“Nii-chan, are you okay? You’re covered in blood.”

“Well, I’m not dying. So stop squeezing me, it hurts my wounds.”

The sister, who was now coiled around Ur’s head like a snake, was born as a normal human just like Ur. She was undoubtedly a human. Until their foolish father, by some miraculous coincidence, obtained something called a [Spirit Egg], and Akane ended up consuming it.

“I understand the situation. It’s a ridiculous miracle. Maybe we’re lucky—or maybe not?”

The golden-haired girl, who had listened to how Ur’s sister ended up like this, smiled intriguingly. There were no more knights around them. Thankfully, the golden-haired girl had sent them away.

—Your sister has merged with an earth spirit. Hide her so she won’t be erased.

Even the knights who maintain order should not easily know about Ur’s sister. She was not protected by the system.

“So, I want to take my sister home… is that okay?”

“Is that okay?”
