Thus, the Boy Runs Through the Labyrinth Volume 1  Chapter 1 part 5

It’s dangerous to rob a Great Fang Boar of its sense of smell.

“Wh-whaaaaaa!?!”

Ur screamed as a huge tusk passed over his head at an incredible speed.

The boar was rampaging. Unable to tolerate the strange smell of the perfume, it thrashed around wildly. Each time, its long tusks gouged the ground, scraped walls, and pierced columns.

This is worse than when it was sane!!!

Ur’s face contorted as he realized the result of his reckless plan. It was far better when the boar had been charging at him straightforwardly!

“Damn it! What do we do!!”

Should they retreat to the warehouse until the boar’s sense of smell recovered? No, that warehouse couldn’t hold out any longer. If it collapsed, they’d be crushed to death!

“Get back!!”

Amidst the chaos, a voice rang out from the silver-haired girl. At the same time, she threw something from the opposite side. Several potion bottles hit the back of the Great Fang Boar, shattering with a crack.

“[O flames, sing and strike down our enemy!]”

Simultaneously, she began chanting something. Her voice resonated like a song—it was a magical incantation, and Ur realized this, though it hadn’t worked earlier. Would it work now? He wondered as a strange stench mingled with the perfume, a sharp smell of a highly flammable substance wafted to his nose.

Lamp oil!

He now understood why she had told him to get back. Ur quickly crouched low and distanced himself from the Great Fang Boar as much as possible.

“[Fireball]!!”

Almost at the same time, the girl cast her magic.

The fireball was visibly larger, thanks to her more meticulous chanting. It struck the Great Fang Boar, now drenched in oil, and fierce flames erupted.

[BUUGYAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!]

“Whoa…!!!”

Ur shouted in amazement at the flames, far fiercer than he had imagined. For the first time, the boar screamed. It was definitely working. He hoped it would continue to work.

[BUGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOO!!]

The Great Fang Boar desperately rubbed its body against a pillar to extinguish the flames, but the fire did not go out, and a foul smell spread through the hall. Its agonized groans echoed repeatedly.

“…………!”

“Damn……!? “

But even so, the Great Fang Boar didn’t die.

[GAAGGGGGGGGGHHHH!!!]

Moreover, it seemed the flames had burned away the perfume’s scent, and the boar now turned its tusks toward the girl. She was in the corner of the room, with no escape.

“Ah, damn it!!”

The moment Ur realized this, he dashed forward. He needed a plan. Rushing in recklessly would only get him killed. Acting on impulse would repeat the mistake with the perfume.

The Great Fang Boar’s weapon was its two enormous tusks, and its skin was thick and tough, still undamaged by the fire. Ur’s shabby dragon tooth spear likely wouldn’t inflict significant damage.

Then, the target should be────

“Between the tusks!!”

Ur swiftly circled around. Before the boar could charge at the girl, he slid under its tusks, standing directly in front of it.

[BUUGOOOOOOOOOOO!!!]

Its foul breath hit him. Standing right in front of the enemy was insane, but Ur stomped his feet, steeling himself.

“Eyes!!!”

Faster than the boar could charge, Ur lunged at its small eyes.

[BUUGYAAAAAAAAAAA!!!?]

“Urrrggghhhh!!”

With a squelch, something crushed under Ur’s hand. Enduring the disgusting sensation, he pushed with all his might.

Ur’s choice was correct. The weak point of the Great Fang Boar, its head, was vulnerable despite the enormous tusks. It required the courage to stand directly in front of those terrifying tusks and charge head-on.

“Take this!!”

Ur ruthlessly gouged into the boar’s head.

He poured all his strength into the spear lodged in the eye socket. Kicking the ground with both legs, he thrust forward with all his might. The sound and feel of something shattering and tearing apart made Ur shiver.

[BUUUGAAAAAAAAA!!!!]

The boar let out a distinct death cry, different from its earlier screams of agony. Its long tusks repeatedly slammed into the ground.

The tusks grazed his head, causing him to feel dizzy from the impact. The fact that a mere graze could do this terrified him, and he fervently wished for the boar to die soon.

“[O ice, sing!]!!”

Then, the silver-haired girl leapt forward from behind Ur. She held a spear made of ice in both hands. With a powerful thrust, she drove the ice spear into the boar’s other eye.

[GAAGGG──── ]

The Great Fang Boar’s body convulsed. With two spears deeply embedded in its head, the boar finally stopped moving.

It was dead. As Ur realized this, the boar’s body began to dissolve. The monstrous form created by the labyrinth melted away. In its place lay a magic stone, twice the size of a goblin’s.

“……Is it over……?”

“……Probably.”

Ur collapsed, exhausted. Beside him, the silver-haired girl also slumped down. He had no energy left to move, but he managed to turn his head towards the girl.

“Are you okay……?”

From what he could see, the girl was uninjured. He felt relieved by this.

However, the girl, despite his concern, looked at him with a sad expression and gently touched his face.

“You’re the one who’s in worse shape.”

“Ah……”

At her words, Ur realized how battered he was. Though the front of the Great Fang Boar was its weak point, its thrashing tusks had battered his body, leaving him bruised all over. He had been in pretty bad shape even before they got here.

“We’re out of healing potions too……”

Acknowledging his injuries made the pain intensify. He wanted to collapse, but there was still work to be done───or so he thought, when a terrible crashing sound echoed through the hall.

“…………”

With a sense of dread, Ur looked towards the source of the sound. The warehouse door they had hidden behind earlier had collapsed, spewing out thick clouds of dust.

“You’ve got to be kidding me……”

Ur collapsed to the ground. For some reason, a soft feeling protected his head. The girl had somehow moved closer and cradled his head.

“Are you alright?”

“……Honestly, not at all. This is such a pain……”

He tried to scratch his head, but pain shot through him, making him grimace. He had apparently cut his head somewhere, as warm blood trickled down his forehead. The girl, looking down at him, gently placed her hand on his head.

“Don’t move. I’ll heal you.”

She started chanting again. During the battle with the Great Fang Boar, he hadn’t had the luxury of listening, but now, he noticed the strange incantation.

It was somewhat like the prayers offered by priests to spirits, but different. Her beautiful, bell-like voice was so soothing that he wanted to listen forever.

“[……────]”

But at the same time, her expression didn’t look good. In fact, her face was quite pale.

Thinking back, she had used magic twice during the battle. Ur had seen several magicians, and using magic twice in a row was already impressive. Using it three times was enough to exhaust anyone.

“Hey, you’re exhausted too……”

“[────]”

He asked if she was alright, but she didn’t stop chanting. Despite the sweat trickling down her face, warm light emanated from her hands. The light, though flickering, seeped into Ur’s wounds, easing the pain.

“[……────]How do you feel?”

The girl finished her magic and asked with a small smile.

The pain was still there. She must have been at her limit. But seeing the pale girl, who still smiled to reassure him, Ur couldn’t bring himself to mention it.

“The pain’s gone. Thank you.”

Following her example, Ur smiled as he spoke. Smiling made his wounds hurt, and he struggled to keep his face from twitching.

“Oh, thank goodness.”

Upon Ur’s words, the silver-haired girl smiled genuinely, as if truly delighted. Her smile was so beautiful, it was saint-like, making one want to gaze at it forever.

“…What’s your name?”

“I am Shizuku. What about you?”

“I’m Ur.”

And so, Ur completed her first dungeon exploration with Shizuku.

Upon finishing the exploration, Ur had one impression: “I won’t do it again.”

Unfortunately, this wish would not come true.
