C-level magic student Volume 1 prologue

Prologue

In this world, there exists an energy called “mana.”

Mana flows through the earth and air of this world, and also courses through the bodies of many living beings.

The people of this world extract mana from natural objects like rocks and crystals where it accumulates, and use this energy in their daily lives.

For example, mana is used to light lamps, refrigerate fresh food, power transportation like trains, and run machinery in factories. Its applications are diverse, and mana has become the foundation of this world’s civilization.

Some living beings, including humans, can use mana to perform what is called “magic.”

Magic is a general term for techniques that create special phenomena by channeling mana into magic circles inscribed with formulas.

There are countless types of magic, such as transforming mana into different properties—like fire or water—and releasing it, or using mana to influence the state of living beings or inanimate objects.

Those who can use “magic” at a certain level of proficiency are called “mages.” They play active roles in various fields: as adventurers who defeat dangerous monsters, as members of national combat units, as researchers advancing civilization, and more.

There are multiple educational institutions around the world that train mages.

These include “magic schools,” where students enroll at age six and study magic for a total of nine years—six years in the elementary division and three years in the middle division. After graduating from magic school, students can enter a four-year “magic academy” to learn more advanced magic.

Not everyone who studies at these schools and academies can become a mage.

Humans need to be born with a certain level of aptitude to use magic, and it’s said that only about three percent of the total population has the potential to use magic beyond the beginner level.

Even so, from a societal perspective, there are more mages than there are positions available. Without exceptional skills, one can’t secure a decent job or gain wealth and fame.

That’s why students at magic educational institutions study desperately, honing their skills and striving for excellent grades to achieve better career prospects after graduation.

Especially in magic academies, where post-graduation careers have a significant impact on one’s life—unlike magic schools that only teach the basics—students approach their studies with an even greater sense of competition.

That’s precisely why…

The faculty at magic academies had never seen a single student who seemed to be deliberately trying to achieve low grades.
