Scientist for an Evil Organization Volume 1 Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Kannazuki san and Hakase san ②

For Sayuki, the moon fairy Lisa was her first friend.

Born into an affluent family, she was defined solely by her family’s worth to others. Having someone who could see her for who she was beyond just “Kannazuki Sayuki” was a rarity.

Thanks to Lisa, she was also able to meet Akane Yukitsuki and Asahina Moe.

She considered the two of them to be precious best friends. However, she currently felt a bit self-conscious around them.

The realm only attainable by those who form a complete spiritual resonance with a fairy…the [Holy Spirit Heaven Attire].

Akane and Moe had easily achieved this new transformation, yet Sayuki alone remained stuck, unable to undergo this rebirth.

“Phew…”

Sitting alone on a bench at the neighborhood park, she let out a sigh.

She had worked up a sweat riding her road bike hobby, exercised at the gym, even trained while transformed – but still could not find that catalyst.

Though only a first-year high school student, Sayuki was the oldest of the Lost Fairies, so she could not rely on Akane or Moe for this.

What was needed was a spiritual connection.

Her repeated failures made it seem like she simply could not deeply resonate with Lisa, leaving Sayuki feeling depressed.

It was right around then that she noticed a silver-haired young man in a cheery mood, carrying supermarket bags in each hand as he tried to cut through the park.

It was Hakase Haruhiko, a man she often saw at the tea shop Nil.

“…Mr. Hakase?”

“Oh, Miss Kannazuki. Good afternoon.”

Noticing her, he gave a gentle smile.

“Good afternoon. Out shopping, Mr. Hakase?”

“Ah yes, a friend far away made me a recommended cup ramen ranking. So I went ahead and bought them all.”

Sure enough, the bags were stuffed with cup ramen.

Despite being a young company executive with model-like looks, his dietary habits seemed quite poor.

“Eating only instant foods is bad for your health.”

“My sister says the same. But for some reason, I just have a taste for these kinds of flavors.”

He seemed a bit sheepish, with an expression like a mischievous child who got caught – an endearing look.

“By the way, you seemed quite down.”

“Eh…”

Though she tried to hide it, Hakase appeared to see right through her. When she couldn’t respond, he took a seat on the bench.

“Mind if I join you?”

“N-No, not at all.”

“Now then, you and I are cake buddies of sorts, so we’ve had a decent amount of conversation. But we rarely interact in daily life. Don’t you think that makes me just the right person for you to confide your troubles in?”

He subtly suggested that confiding in him would have no impact on her daily life. Without forcefully prying, he waited patiently. Sayuki hesitated for a moment, but ultimately took him up on his kindness.

“Well, you see…I play tennis.”

“I see.”

“I’m going to be participating in a doubles match coming up. I thought I was pretty decent, but my juniors play in such seamless harmony far beyond me. I can’t even stay in sync with my own partner, and that’s why I’ve been feeling down.”

Of course, she couldn’t mention fairies or the Lost Fairies.

While she spoke vaguely, Hakase seemed deep in serious thought – making her feel a bit guilty.

“So in other words…it’s about being spiritually in tune?”

She felt a jolt.

He had probably just phrased “being in sync” in a more profound way. But that phrasing struck at the very root of Sayuki’s troubles.

“I’m no good at sports myself, so I can’t advise on technique. But if it’s a matter of being spiritually in tune, you should start by conveying to your partner what exactly is making you feel uneasy.”

“But I’m the senior, and I’m the only one who can’t…”

“To become friends, you need to show your good side. But to walk together, you need the thick skin to show your bad side, to see their unpleasant parts, and still be confident in saying ‘I love you’ regardless.”

With a smile, Hakase took out a necklace with a blue gemstone from his pocket.

“This is called a friendship stone. It’s said to foster closeness between friends and protect that bond. A gift – will you accept it?”

“Eh, but…”

“If you wear this, it’s sure to work out. And if you fail, just blame it on me saying such nonsense. That way, you’ll have no reason to worry, right?”

He stood up from the bench, supermarket bags in hand once more.

“It’ll be alright. You’re not failing because you can’t resonate – you’re just a bit tense. I’m sure you’ve already built something you can entrust your heart to.”

Sayuki fell silent. Despite knowing nothing of the circumstances, Hakase had accurately pinpointed the core of her troubles. Moreover, he gave her the very words she had longed to hear.

“Well, just let this philosophical guy deceive you for once. Sometimes you need to act the fool to see what’s invisible, as they say.”

“U-Um, please wait!”

But ignoring her call, Hakase left the park behind.

Sayuki simply watched his retreating back, her gaze then falling to her palm. For just a moment, it seemed the blue gemstone gave a faint glimmer.

Some days later…

A mysterious being called Traion appeared, endlessly emitting the sound of a train crossing signal and causing a noise disturbance across the city.

Numerous demon soldiers also manifested, and the Lost Fairies found themselves in battle. While not as strong as the last giant, the mysterious being had grown more powerful than before. Outnumbered by the enemy forces, the fairy princesses were pushed into a dire situation.

“Ugh, at this rate…”

Lurun, the avatar of Moe, let out a pained voice. Even the holy flame Eres was surrounded by demon soldiers.

In this crisis, Fiona of the pure stream naturally spoke the words to weave…She knew she could do it now. She did not doubt it.

“Moon Fairy Lisa…please, together with me. Holy Spirit Heaven Attire – Fiona=Lisa!”

pure stream transformed her into a new form.

A fairy princess draped in crystalline water like feathered raiment. The citizens watching the battle from afar were left breathless by her resplendent beauty.

“Fiona, so beautiful…”

Even Lurun gazed in admiration, her eyes sparkling.

Here, the pure stream Fiona had attained the Holy Spirit Heaven Attire. And in her heart was definitely a feeling of gratitude toward someone, somewhere, who had affirmed her bond with the moon fairy Lisa.

13: Anonymous Combatant

A brand new costume for Fiona right at the start of a new thread! Finally arrived!

14: Anonymous Combatant

She’s not just a fairy, she’s too beautiful to even be called a celestial maiden…

15: Anonymous Combatant

Her light leotard with blue and white as the base colors, with water forming beautiful wing-like shapes, is utterly breathtaking in its elegance.

16: Hakase

Nice work, Fiona-tan.

17: Anonymous Combatant

What’s up, Hakase!?

18: Anonymous Combatant

I thought you’d say something creepier!?

19: Hakase

What do you mean creepy!?

Well, she is insanely beautiful, that’s for sure. The pervert cameraman Photo Monstrosity Camecollion was fully activated.

But this time, I felt more like “She’s grown up so well…” you know?

20: Anonymous Combatant

Why are you acting like her mentor? lol

21: Anonymous Combatant

More like, you’re probably one of those creepy otaku who get excited saying

“I raised her” when their favorite idol gets popular.

22: Anonymous Combatant

Ah, the behind-the-scenes boyfriend type. The kind who thinks the idol’s smiling at him during a live show.

23: Hakase

Well, Fiona-tan is my oshi, so I’m not too far off base.

24: Anonymous Combatant

She was implemented quite a while after Eres-chan and Lurun-chan, huh.

25: Anonymous Combatant

Don’t say “implemented”, this ain’t a gacha game.

26: Anonymous Combatant

But you know, it did feel like she struggled more with the new transformation than those two.

What’s the deal there, Hakase?

27: Hakase

Okay, here’s how the Lost Fairies girls’ normal forms work:

Contractor: “I’ll give you my magic power!”

Fairy: “I’ll convert it to magic and give it back!”

Contractor: “Thanks, I’ll use it!”

That leotard is essentially the “magic itself” that the fairy borrows the contractor’s magic to use.

At the same time, it acts as a medium to activate the magic…a magic conversion device of sorts, with the fairy playing an assisting AI-like role.

So in transformed state, the contractor provides magic power, while the fairy helps control the magic. This allows them to use magic with a lighter burden on both sides.

28: Hakase

But the Sacred Armament is a spiritual fusion state where the fairy temporarily lends all her magic power and conversion ability to the contractor, who takes full control.

Fairy: “I’ll fuse with you and lend you all my magic power and conversion ability for now. You take control!”

Fairy + Contractor: “Got it, leave it to me!”

Technically, the contractor has to fully control the combined magic power of both.

This part isn’t actually that difficult if the contractor can handle it.

The real challenge was the spiritual fusion itself, before that step.

29: Anonymous Combatant

So fusion is really that hard?

I had this image of them bouncing off each other failing to combine.

30: Hakase

Nah, the spiritual fusion itself isn’t particularly difficult tech-wise.

As long as the recipient is willing and the fairy agrees, it’s easy.

If they failed at that point, the real reason was probably mental.

“Does the fairy really trust me with her soul? Can I accept that trust?”

If Fiona-tan struggled, she was probably insecure and not very good with intimacy at her core.

31: Anonymous Combatant

A fact I didn’t want to know…!

32: Anonymous Combatant

Ah, so the type who can put on a front but actually lacks self-confidence deep down.

Not so much poor social skills as a hidden introvert?

33: Hakase

What the spiritual fusion demands isn’t technical skill –

it’s accepting the other’s entire being without a shred of doubt that you can do it.

Call it harmonizing souls if you want, but the essence is childlike innocence and unshakable self-belief.

In other words, the #1 talent needed for the Sacred Armament is “being an idiot”.

34: Anonymous Combatant

So then how did she suddenly gain the ability to transform?

35: Hakase

Well, if it came down to mentality, all it would take is one little trigger to change things.

Maybe she found some good luck charm?

Even if it has no actual special effect, if she believes “I can do it with this,” that’s enough.

36: Anonymous Combatant

So the powered-up form isn’t that difficult either, huh.

37: Anonymous Combatant

Wait, based on the Hakase’s explanation, while it makes sense for the still young Lurun-chan, for Eres-chan to have transformed first…

38: Anonymous Combatant

Hey, don’t even go there, idiot.

39: Anonymous Combatant

Eres-chan may be big up top, but she’s pure enough to not doubt anyone!

40: Anonymous Combatant

Which is kind of dangerous in itself, really. Being that cute but not doubting anyone?

41: Hakase

Still, I may have gone too far this time. If they find out, I’ll get scolded… my bad.

After consulting Hakase Haruhiko, Sayuki was able to easily master the [Sacred Armament] transformation that she had previously struggled so much with.

She had confided her worries to the fairy Liza under the moonlight. But that girl had told her, “It’s okay, I can entrust my soul to you.” After that, she was able to transform surprisingly smoothly.

A blue gemstone given to her by Hakase shone on her chest.

Sayuki had a strong belief that this protective stone allowed her success, and now wore it regularly.

“Oh, Sayuki-chan. That necklace is pretty.”

One day after school, she was invited to Akane’s house.

As they chatted and read recommended manga, at one point there was a lull in the conversation when Akane happened to glance at the gemstone and complimented it.

“Fufu, you think so?”

“Yeah, it really suits you.”

“Thank you. It’s one of my favorites.”

Being told it suited her made Sayuki happier than expected, causing her to blush slightly.

“I’m just not into that kind of stuff, you know?”

“Don’t say that. You’re cute, Akane, so accessories would look good on you too. Want to go look for some together sometime?”

“Eh- that’s kinda embarrassing? But if you pick them out for me, Sayuki-chan, I guess it’s okay?”

“Then shall we invite Moe too and find matching ones for all of us?”

That Sayuki could suggest such things now was unthinkable for her former self. But this blue gem was said to protect friendship, giving her a little courage.

“That’s a good idea! Oh, speaking of Moe-chan, she’s been messaging Hakase-san lately. Look at this!”

Akane showed her private photos of Hakase – at a cat cafe surrounded by cats, and with the master of Cafe Nil.

“Moe-chan sent me these. Doesn’t Hakase-san look so happy surrounded by cats? He loves them but his sister won’t let him have one as a pet. I want to go to a cat cafe too.”

“I see…”

(Come to think of it, I don’t have Hakase-san’s contact info…)

For some reason,

an inexplicable discomfort welled up in Sayuki’s chest, contrary to how she had felt moments ago.
