I, a high school teacher, was transported volume 1 chapter 1 part 5

“In this world where the younger you are, the greater the benefits, you’re the youngest. Don’t sell yourself short.”

…Eventually, alone in the cafeteria, I stared at my finished dishes.

“sensei…”

I turned towards the voice to see Sakuragi peering in from the cafeteria entrance.

“Don’t be too discouraged. Everyone’s a bit on edge, suddenly finding themselves in this world.”

“…Don’t worry. I’m fine. You were training today too, right, Sakuragi? Go get some rest.”

“Yes.”

“Well, thanks though.”

“Yes!”

When I thanked her, Sakuragi seemed to feel a bit relieved and left with a smile.

Afterward, Miree briefly explained tomorrow’s schedule to me. Seeing our interaction, she seemed to have decided it would be difficult for me to be with the students. She’s apparently going to arrange a separate schedule for me.

As I was about to return to my room after thanking Miree, I heard voices arguing on the stairs.

“Why? Are you siding with Domoto too?”

“No! Akira-kun, you’re acting strange. Even today, to the sensei…”

It seemed to be Kohinata and Kimijima. I instinctively stopped when I heard Kimijima say “to the sensei,” but Kohinata noticed me coming up the stairs and clicked his tongue before returning to his room.

“Are you okay?”

“…I’m fine.”

Although I called out to her, Kimijima headed straight to her room with her head down.

I stared at her retreating figure for a while, then returned to my room feeling powerless, unable to do anything.

Closing the door to my room and finding myself alone, I felt a bit relieved. Too many things had happened, and I was tired. I quickly closed my eyes on the bed.

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of a distant bell.

Getting up from the bed and peeking out the window, I saw a large island with a bell hanging from it floating in the distance. I could see someone pulling on a rope there. Intrigued by this strange sight, I moved closer to the window and gazed outside for a while.

When I went to the dining hall, students were scattered about eating their meals. Kohina hadn’t arrived yet. As I entered, two first-year students silently nodded their heads slightly.

After a moment’s hesitation, I decided to eat a bit apart from the other students to avoid disturbing them. The food wasn’t unfamiliar to us who came from Japan. While eating my salad, I observed the students.

The students seemed to be enjoying this world, learning magic and such. I overheard someone say, “I wish I could use healing magic too.” Magic, huh… I remember being told that we could use life magic.

As students finished their meals, they left the dining hall. I stayed there since I was supposed to receive an explanation about this world afterward. After a while, Miree arrived.

She guided me to a spacious room on the first floor. It wasn’t as large as the gymnasium where students practiced, but it was big enough to fit a kendo match court.

“Shigeto-san, you’ll be training here. It’s a bit small, but…”

“I’m sorry for the trouble. Thank you very much.”

“No, please don’t worry about it.”

I started learning how to use magic. To begin with, I was taught life magic, which is said to help grasp the feel of magic.

The magic in this world seems closer to what we’d call psychic powers, rather than chanting spells to activate it.

Life magic, also called basic magic, involves fundamental spells for each element. Fire magic lights fires, water magic creates water, wind magic generates wind. These elements refer to types of power, and people have different aptitudes for each.

“Shigeto-san, you have wind magic and non-elemental magic, right…”

With that said, I started practicing how to generate wind, which is easier to imagine. Non-elemental doesn’t mean there’s no element; it’s a catch-all term for rare elements that haven’t been properly categorized yet. Apparently, there is some kind of element, but it’s unknown.

The downside is that it’s unclear what kind of elemental effects non-elemental magic can produce. If the elemental tendency becomes clear, it could potentially allow for extremely rare and powerful magic like gravity or time manipulation. It’s an element full of possibilities, they say.

At first, I couldn’t grasp the feel of magic, but Miree patiently provided thorough guidance. Thanks to that, I eventually managed to create something like a gentle breeze.

“Wonderful. That’s it. You’ve managed to create wind now.”

“…But what can this wind be used for?”

“Hmm. Starting fires, drying hair, and… cooling off?”

“I-I see. …Life magic indeed.”

However, even this small magic is quite interesting, being a mysterious phenomenon I’ve never experienced before. As I got carried away creating wind, I started to feel dizzy.

Assuming it was a symptom of magical exhaustion, we decided to take a break from magic practice.

While recovering my magical power, I listened to the history of this world.

First, there are two continents in this world. One is called the “Yggdrasil Continent” and the other is the “Irminsul Continent.”

Before we transferees arrived, monsters were the main inhabitants of this world. Well, they probably still are. Much of both continents remains monster territory, and human habitation isn’t very widespread. As a result, unlike our original world, this isn’t a safe place, and learning combat skills is essential.

The conversation continued with the formation of countries in this world, and I learned that these countries are constantly seeking new talent for their own prosperity. When transferees like us arrive, our abilities are made known to each country, and if they want specific talent, they make offers.

“I see. …By the way, have those employment offers already come in?”

“Yes, since you all have the protection of high-ranking spirits, we’ve received offers from almost every country.”

“Oh…”

But surely there are no offers for me. I can somewhat guess from the flow of events so far. Miree, sensing this, tries to reassure me.

“But I think there will be offers for Shigeto-san too. Not as a combat asset, but as someone with knowledge from another world. Since you’re a Sensei, there will definitely be countries seeking intellectual talent.”

“R-Really?”

“Yes, don’t worry.”

Miree’s smile eases my anxiety a bit.

I see, if all humans are transferees from other worlds or related to them, it’s natural that there would be a demand for knowledge from newly transferred individuals. Thinking calmly, that makes sense. However, while I am a Sensei, I’m a history Sensei. I’m not sure what level of knowledge they’re looking for, which makes me a bit anxious.

This world seems to have developed a fair amount of culture due to transferees from various worlds. Because of the existence of magic, civilization is built by combining things like Earth’s scientific technology with magic.

Considering the existence of the Sky Temple, I assume they have technology like airplanes. When I ask about this, I’m told that while such technology exists, it’s not common due to the danger of flying monsters.

So how do people travel? The Sky Temple and the lower world are connected by transfer formations, which are magic circles. The transfer destinations are set up in the main temples in each country of this world, and when we descend to the lower world, we choose the nearest main temple.

However, even though humans are expanding their living areas in this world, it’s still very much a world of monsters. I heard that some cities have been destroyed by what’s called a Monster Parade, a massive outbreak of monsters.

After lunch, it was time for explanations about actual combat techniques and such. Although I had practiced Iaido, I couldn’t perform it without my sword. I needed to listen carefully to the explanations about the weapons of this world.

A specialist Sensei would instruct us on close combat. Miree introduced me to Karimaa, a large, muscular man with long hair.

Karimaa first guided me to the armory. Transferees are provided with one weapon here, and they’re taught fighting styles that match their chosen weapon.

“Shigeto-san, what kind of weapon would you prefer?”

The armory was lined with various weapons. Swords, long weapons like spears, weapons with chains attached, all sorted by type. I started by looking at the sword section.

Of course, as someone who practiced Iaido, I would have preferred a Japanese sword… but I didn’t expect to find such a thing in this world.

“Is this… a short sword?”

Still, I thought even a single-edged sword would be fine, and as I looked around the room, I found a short sword leaning against the wall. I couldn’t help but pick it up.

“As expected, Shigeto-san also chose a katana… I’m sorry, the regular-sized katanas were already chosen by those children, and this is all we have in stock now…”

“Ah, no. It’s natural for them to choose weapons from our world. …I see, so past transferees from our homeland left this weapon in this world.”

“Yes, it’s quite popular in the lower world too, but it seems to require skilled craftsmen, so there aren’t many of them.”

“I see… May I take a look?”

“Of course, please feel free to handle it.”

At Karimaa’s invitation, I picked up the short sword. Despite its small size, its weight in my hand made it feel real. I placed my thumb on the tsuba and slightly opened the koiguchi. It even had a habaki. I slowly drew the blade and held it up in front of me. The blade had a wavy pattern, seeming no less impressive than a Japanese sword.

…Impressive… Is it a double hamon? I wonder if they can create such beautiful patterns in this world.

I had been handling Japanese swords since I was young. Although it was an unknown school with no students, my grandfather, who strictly adhered to old traditions, always insisted on training with real swords. Until I left home for university, there wasn’t a day I didn’t touch a sword.

I touched the edge to my fingernail and drew it across, checking its sharpness. It seemed fine. I returned it to its scabbard. The feel of it sliding back was good too. I drew and sheathed it several times. The action was smooth.

Alright. No problems. I’ve trained with short swords too.

TL Note: The first chapter of this novel is mostly an info dump, but it gets really good later. Please be patient.
