C-level magic student Volume 1  Chapter 10 part 4

“‘I can’t… die yet…'”

The Black Annihilation Dragon Schwarzwaldius’ eyes widened.

I had blocked the Black Dragon’s strike.

“‘To stop you, I can’t die yet.'”

…I myself couldn’t understand at all what was happening to my body.

I had reached my physical limit, my sword had broken, and I was in a state of severe injury all over my body when the Black Dragon’s finishing blow came down on me.

The massive tail swinging down was something I should have had no chance of blocking.

The Black Annihilation Dragon must have been certain it would be the finishing blow.

However, I defended against that strike.

I caught it with a sword that had almost lost most its blade.

A clear look of surprise could be seen on the face of Schwarzwaldius, the Black Annihilation Dragon of the End Times.

Upon confirming that I was still standing unscathed, the Black Dragon glared at me and launched a series of attacks as if desperate to end my life.

Attacks that would mean instant death if they hit directly.

I dodged, blocked, and struck back against such attacks countless times.

The scene of a dying insect being poked and toyed with was no longer there.

In the midst of this intense battle with the overwhelmingly powerful Schwarzwaldius, the Black Annihilation Dragon of the End Times, I was enveloped by a strange sensation.

Despite being so exhausted earlier that I could barely stand, I was somehow able to block the Black Dragon’s strike.

Moreover, strength returned to my body that should have been battered and broken, and now magical power was surging through my entire being.

I was pouring an extraordinary amount of magical power into body strengthening magic and enchantments to fight the Black Dragon, but I felt no sense of magical depletion or fatigue.

On the contrary, magical power was overflowing endlessly like a flooding river.

“You… that power…!!”

The Black Dragon’s eyes widened, seemingly letting out a voice of surprise involuntarily.

Before I knew it, my body was enveloped in a golden light that flickered like burning flames, and the sword in my hand had a blade of light extending from where its physical blade had been lost.

The Black Dragon glared at this sight with obvious displeasure and intensified its attacks even further.

I clashed with the Black Dragon, leaving trails of golden light in my wake.

It was my first time using this power of golden light.

A mighty magical power I had never been taught how to use, whose name I didn’t even know.

But I could wield it naturally, as if it had always been a part of me.

The will engraved in my soul cried out strongly.

—Protect the people.

—Defeat that black dragon.

A fierce exchange between black violence and golden light.

The impact was so tremendous that the school cafeteria was now destroyed beyond recognition.

Magical power kept overflowing, but even so, my power did not surpass the Black Dragon’s.

However, to defeat the black dragon, I somehow managed to withstand each of its calamitous attacks.

And then, in the midst of our clash, I saw a single opening.

An opening in the Black Dragon’s upper body, created when I deflected upward its horizontal sweeping attack launched by its forelegs using my blade of light.

The moment I spotted that opening, I unconsciously pulled my sword back and poured golden magical power into it.

There was only one thing to do.

With this single thread of opportunity, I would strike the Black Dragon with all my might.

–I’ve never used this power before.

–But I know.

–This technique carries within it a certain will.

–The will of heroes who once fought to protect the people.

“Sparkle of Glory – Ehre”

From the sword I swung, a dazzling blade of light was released.

That single strike, condensed with tremendous magical power, exploded against the Black Dragon’s upper body with a blinding light.

Immediately after, I was hit by a shockwave so strong it nearly blew me away.

Surprised by the unbelievable power of the technique I had just unleashed, I focused on the scene before me, feeling a sense of satisfaction while waiting for the large amount of debris and dust to settle.

As the dust gradually cleared and I could confirm what lay ahead, I widened my eyes at the sight that spread before me, —

and was left speechless.

That dragon had been spoken of as a calamity for thousands of years.

Once every few hundred years, it would appear before people and commit indiscriminate slaughter.

Villages, fields, lives – all burned to ash by its black flames.

People had resisted that dragon many times.

In the midst of their valiant resistance, individuals who became the people’s hope appeared time and time again.

Sometimes a giant swordsman, sometimes thousands of mages, would rise up to try and defeat that dragon.

However, that hope was crushed time and time again.

No matter how skilled a warrior wielded their sword, no matter how many hundreds or thousands of mages gathered to cast powerful spells, the dragon would receive their attacks without flinching and sweep away the warriors.

When that black dragon appeared, people’s peace came to an end.

It would utterly annihilate people’s hopes, light, and prayers with overwhelming violence.

Thus it was named.

—Schwarzwaldius, the Black Annihilation Dragon of the End Times.

……Before the black dragon, any hope would turn to despair.

“No… way…”

What Alphonse saw was the figure of Schwarzwaldius, the Black Annihilation Dragon of the End Times, without a single scratch despite receiving his all-out attack.

Not only was it unharmed, but its body had grown even larger than before, and what was once jet black now had cracks of ominous purple light running through it.

From that light that seemed to gush forth, an extraordinary amount of magical power could be felt.

Alphonse was momentarily stunned to see the Black Dragon not only unharmed by his best attack, but even more powerful. …But he quickly regained his composure.

If he couldn’t defeat it, he had no choice but to fight again.

He could feel his strength gradually fading since unleashing that technique earlier, but he couldn’t afford to give up.

Alphonse steeled himself once more and faced the Black Dragon.

However–.

“As I thought, that man’s blood is dangerous”

“…Ugh!!”

By the time Alphonse felt the tremendous impact that hit him, his body was already being launched high into the air.

There was no doubt he had been attacked by the Black Dragon, but Alphonse couldn’t perceive any of what had happened.

And in the next moment after realizing his body was soaring through the air, Alphonse was slammed into the ground hard enough to create a crater.

“Gah… Agh…”

With his respiratory functions paralyzed from the powerful impact to his entire body, Alphonse let out a groaning voice as he contorted his face.

Before his eyes, a huge black shadow suddenly appeared.

“It seems you’re no longer able to stand, as one might expect”

Unlike its previous flustered demeanor, the Black Dragon now looked down at Alphonse with a somewhat calm expression.

Alphonse tried to stand up, but his body only trembled violently, unable to even muster any strength.

“…No matter how diluted, that man’s blood is not to be underestimated.”

Saying this, the Black Dragon opened its mouth wide and began to gather dark flames.

“In honor of your ability to resist me, however slightly, I’ll obliterate you without leaving even ashes behind”

The Black Dragon formed an enormous – truly enormous – mass of black flame in front of its mouth.

From its relentless attacks to this finishing posture without a moment’s delay.

There was a palpable determination to never again allow for any miracle or hope.

And then the mass of black flame was released towards Alphonse without any hesitation or mercy.

The black flames didn’t so much “destroy” as “erase,” vaporizing the earth in an instant.

When the black flames had completely burned out, an enormous crater so deep its bottom couldn’t be seen had formed before the Black Dragon’s eyes.

This time, the Black Dragon was certain beyond any doubt that it had finished off Alphonse.

–However, a strong sense of incongruity arose within the Black Dragon.

The source of this incongruity was detected not by sight, but by smell.

The scent of the one it had just surely obliterated was present behind it.

As the Black Dragon turned around, there lay Alphonse,

And standing beside him was another man.

In his fading consciousness, Alphonse saw the figure of a man in his field of vision.

Alphonse felt like he recognized this man somehow, but soon realized.

It was the male student who had been leisurely continuing his meal on the second floor of the cafeteria during the commotion earlier.

“You fought well. Leave the rest to me.”

The eyes looking straight at Alphonse were slightly different from before.

The pupils that had been black when they met earlier were now shining golden.

The male student stood up, turned around, and calmly declared to Schwarzwaldius, the Black Annihilation Dragon of the End Times.

“It’s been a while, Blackie.”

–And with that.

This scene was the last thing Alphonse saw before his consciousness faded away.
