A Teacher, But I’m Feared as a Witch Volume 2 chapter 7 part 2

Maple Leaf is said to specialize in sacred magic also known as holy magic, or healing magic. Considering that the predecessor of the Holy Empire was a religious organization called the Maple Leaf Holy Church, it somehow makes sense.

However, if they focus too much on healing magic, other talented magicians might not have sufficient environments to research their respective types of magic. While specializing in one area might sound good, it eliminates the possibility of combining multiple types of magic from the start.

With such concerns in mind, we walked through the Holy Capital and eventually arrived in front of a large building.

Like other buildings, it has white outer walls and a roof, but what stands out are the many large round pillars lined up. It’s a huge building that looks like a Greek temple.

Although it doesn’t look like an educational facility at all, the people coming in and out are mostly young boys and girls wearing clothes similar to Alabaster’s, so there is somewhat of a student-like atmosphere.

Everyone wearing the same clothes is the same as at Fidic Academy, so I wonder if in this world, everyone has a set uniform.

Alabaster tells us to “Wait a moment,” so as we’re looking at the academy building from the outside, Alabaster returns with someone. It’s a middle-aged man wearing a small navy blue cape over a primarily white outfit. The man looks at us with a gentle smile and tilts his head slightly.

Alabaster stands in front of us with the man and lightly clears his throat before gesturing to the man standing next to him.

“This is Mr. Cameron, a senior instructor at this Holy Capital Magic Academy. In Maple Leaf, senior instructors at magic academies are considered equivalent to court magicians and are recognized as top-level magicians. Mr. Cameron is also certified as one of the highest-level magicians in the country.”

“My name is Cameron Ridge. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Introduced by Alabaster, Cameron bowed deeply. Then, Alabaster glanced at us sideways before turning back to Cameron.

“As I mentioned briefly earlier, this is Miss Aoi, a senior faculty member at Fidic Academy. And these are Mr. Strauss and Ms. Eliza, regular faculty members. Also, we have Mr. Court and other noble students from different countries. Lastly, there’s Shenley, who’s from our country but enrolled at Fidic Academy.”

“Oh my.”

As Cameron was bowing to Alabaster’s introduction, his eyes blinked when he saw Shenley. Feeling the gaze upon him, Shenley flinched and looked down.

“Isn’t that Shenley? I see, so you were able to enroll in Fidic Academy. Well, that’s good. If I remember correctly, Shenley couldn’t use healing magic. At Fidic Academy, I suppose you’ll be treated as a somewhat decent mage. It’s about finding the right place for the right person, isn’t it?”

Cameron’s words, though cheerful, subtly looked down on Shenley. Shenley seemed to shrink, intimidated.

“Hmm, do you know each other?” Alabaster asked.

Shenley, still looking down a bit, opened his mouth.

“Well… I was here to this academy for just a month…”

“That’s right. Students transferred from various regions usually attend my lecture at least once, but Shenley…”

Cameron started to say something with a sigh, causing Shenley to shiver slightly.

Feeling the conversation was odd, I, representing the faculty, spoke up to support Shenley.

“Shenley is a diligent and very talented student. I’m sure she’ll become an excellent mage in the future.”

As I stated this clearly, Cameron paused for a moment. Then, he smiled again with a gentle expression.

“Is that so? That’s good to hear. After all, our academy has difficulty nurturing talents other than healing magic. In that respect, I suppose Fidic Academy allows students to learn various types of magic simultaneously? That’s wonderful. Your educational curriculum must be excellent. If we tried to do that at our academy, we’d end up with nothing but mediocre mages.”

Saying this, Cameron let out a light laugh. However, sensing some implications in his words, several of us, including myself, furrowed our brows.

Guided by Cameron, we entered the building and proceeded down the hallway. Apparently, the building was two stories tall, and we were currently walking along the east side of the first floor. Except for the gray stone floor, everything else – walls and ceiling – was pure white. There was no sign of furnishings or people.

“Are lectures in session now? I don’t see anyone around,” I asked.

Cameron turned around with a friendly smile.

“To practice healing magic, there’s something essential. What do you think that is?”

He posed a question like a teacher addressing students.

“…Do you mean the subjects on whom to use healing magic?”

Eliza, who was right behind me, answered.

Cameron nodded, pulling his chin in. “That’s correct. This is the most populous city in Maple Leaf. Therefore, we have many injured individuals from the knighthood, mercenary groups, and adventurers. They enter through the west entrance of the academy and wait in line in the large treatment room. Our students are busy dealing with them, so they can hardly move during the morning hours.”

Nodding in understanding at Cameron’s explanation, I voiced a question that came to mind.

“So, in this city, are injury treatments provided free of charge?”

When I asked this, Cameron smiled awkwardly.

“No, no, we can’t go that far. However, we do provide treatment to the followers of the Maple Leaf Holy Religion for just a minimal donation. Many people become followers because of this, so it’s a good system for both the academy and the users.”

He replied somewhat proudly. Indeed, it’s a good system both economically and religiously, but can those who became followers through this method be said to have voluntarily joined the Maple Leaf Holy Religion?

“I understand why there are no students using healing magic, but I don’t see any students with aptitudes for other types of magic. Are there overwhelmingly more students learning healing magic?”

When I asked further, Cameron nodded as if remembering something.

“Ah, the other children? Many students learning magic other than healing magic help with treatments in the morning. Most of the academy’s faculty also cooperate with the treatments, so there are fewer lectures, and they even receive a small wage. It’s a situation where we’re all helping each other, I suppose.”

Saying this, Cameron laughed cheerfully.

There’s a big difference in thinking and management methods compared to Fidic Academy. I felt this, but then I realized that there were few students using healing magic at Fidic Academy.

Perhaps the optimal system is built according to each situation.

“Here we are. This is the special room for treating serious injuries.”

While I was lost in thought, it seemed we had arrived at our destination. Cameron had turned back to us in front of a large set of double doors.

“Special room… so you divide the rooms into several types,”

Strauss asked.

“Yes. In our academy, we also judge the rank of healing mages by the level of injuries they can treat. Even if they can’t use the highest-level magic, if they can quickly heal severe patients, they can be registered as advanced mages. That level is defined as being able to heal bone fractures or deep cuts in one minute.”

Cameron answered Strauss’s question with a deepening smile. Strauss, Eliza, Court, and others let out sounds of admiration at this.

“Students can perform such high-level healing… I see. So, in this special room, the most excellent students are performing treatments?”

As Strauss muttered, recapping what Cameron had said, Cameron nodded greatly and put his hand on the door handle.

“That’s right. Since we have the honor of a senior faculty member from Fidic Academy visiting, I thought we should show you the capabilities of our academy. Haha. How embarrassing. I’ve shown a bit of childishness.”

With a sheepish laugh, Cameron opened the door to the special room.

Suddenly, screams and muffled groans that hadn’t been audible at all before leaked into the hallway.

“…Huh?”
