A Teacher, But I’m Feared as a Witch Volume 1 Chapter 10 part 1

Chapter 10: Change

In the next class, Foar was again the first to wait in the classroom.

It seemed the students and Eliza’s group had grown accustomed to Foar’s presence. They took their seats while discussing and chatting with those nearby.

Hmm, I couldn’t see Headmaster Glen. Was he not here today? I thought he was aiming for perfect attendance… Oh, there he is. He’s moved outside the window in front. The students have noticed but are pretending not to see him.

Well, now everyone’s here.

After calling out all the names to confirm attendance, I began:

“Let’s start the class. We’ll continue from last time, teaching you how to activate two attributes simultaneously.”

With that, I began the lesson.

Following up on our previous lesson about enlarging clouds, there were two ways to develop this further.

First, continue activating only water magic over time until a thundercloud forms.

Or, add wind magic for simultaneous dual-attribute activation to speed up thundercloud generation.

I’ve given them the starting point, so they should learn the first method on their own with daily practice. But the second requires knowledge they don’t have yet.

I lowered my chin, then raised my face to look at everyone.

“First, let’s learn about electricity. Electricity is actually contained in various things. However, pure water, which contains no impurities, doesn’t conduct electricity. The water created by water magic is thought to be close to completely pure water.”

That might have been a bit difficult. Everyone was just looking at me without saying anything.

“…However, pure water readily absorbs soluble substances with its high solvent power. Therefore, even with water magic alone, it will eventually lead to thundercloud generation. The problem is that it’s far too inefficient. To solve this, we use two or more types of magic simultaneously.”

After saying this, I activated water and wind magic.

“You can also speed up thundercloud creation with water and earth magic, but water and wind are far easier. Let’s start by memorizing the incantation. If you understand the mechanism thoroughly and chant, you should know how much magical power to put into each phrase.”

As I spoke, I increased the temperature of the water sphere created by water magic and increased the circulation speed with wind magic. I surrounded it with wind like a tornado, compressing it towards the center.

It was a sphere of water and wind about one meter in diameter.

The sphere quickly accumulated static electricity, eventually discharging externally.

The power was terrifying, but this was just the basics of basics.

“…This is the lightning ball, the Electric Ball, which is the entry point to lightning magic. Now, let’s try it.”

I wondered if Foar would get angry, but surprisingly, everyone seemed eager. While slightly surprised internally, I began teaching the incantation.

“The incantation consists of five phrases: water generation, heating, wind generation, acceleration, and convergence. If you use the usual water or wind magic incantations, it will exceed ten phrases and likely repel. So this incantation uses quite different wording from typical ones. Understand the meaning of each word and chant carefully.”

After this preface, I explained the meaning and effect of each part of the incantation.

At first, they were surprised, but soon questions came one after another. In the end, even Foar said “I see” and started chanting obediently.

Surprisingly, the first to form it into magic was the least noticeable student, the youngest, Dean.

“Ah, Teacher Aoi! Look, look!? Th-This!”

Dean was panicking, holding up a sphere that had begun discharging outwards. In a calm state, he would reduce the magic supply and shrink its size, but now he couldn’t do that.

“Try directing your magic power towards convergence. That way, you can further increase its power as lightning magic.”

“Eh, that direction!?”

I approached the astonished Dean and observed the slightly unstable sphere.

“…You’ve succeeded in increasing the scale, but you can’t maintain the balance of magic power. You’re putting too much power into heating. Once it’s grown this much, if you direct about 80% of your power to acceleration and convergence, it will grow on its own. If it goes out of control, I’ll handle it. Come on, give it a try.”

“Ou-out of c-control…!? I-Is it safe!?”

“Don’t worry.”

Hearing my answer, Dean, on the verge of tears, focused on manipulating his magic power with a determined expression.

He’s quite quick to grasp the knack. Dean understands the mechanism of electricity very well. At this rate, moving to the next stage should be possible.

As we continued, the amount of discharge increased, and the internal energy became considerable. The violently flickering sphere was becoming difficult to maintain its size as the energy continued to expand.

Dean was trying to control it while sweating profusely, but he had clearly reached his limit.

“Let’s stop here.”

Saying that, I used earth magic on the sphere that was about to explode.

“Lightning rod.”

I materialized a metal rod and stuck one end into the ground.

With crackling sounds, the out-of-control lightning was absorbed into the lightning rod and disappeared. The thundercloud, which had been entirely composed of magical power, dissipated.

After confirming its disappearance, Dean collapsed on the spot.

“Phew… That was intense…”

Dean muttered with a half-smile, then realized he was the center of attention in the classroom and gulped.

Shenley approached Dean with a smile and spoke to him.

“Amazing, Dean! How did you do it so quickly!?”

As Shenley approached and asked, Dean’s face turned bright red as he shook his head slightly from side to side.

“Huh!? N-no, when you ask how… Um, well, you see… Instead of rotating in a straight line, it’s like, changing the direction of rotation in several rows… You know, I heard about ‘rubbing together,’ so I tried to make it do that…”

Looking down at Dean, who was explaining clumsily while flustered, Eliza’s eyes widened as she murmured.

“…Like Shenley, he skipped grades, but Dean’s specialty is earth magic…”

Hearing those words, Speyside furrowed his brow.

“…Should I take that as a dig at me, who mainly teaches water magic…?”

“No, it’s not! But, I’m sorry!”

Eliza hurriedly apologized to Speyside, but Strauss nodded slightly at their exchange.

“…Indeed. When learning truly new magic like today, it seems the students learn faster than us teachers. And that’s regardless of their specialties.”

Those words resonated strangely well.

I agreed and speculated:

“Probably because they’re not bound by the common sense of magic. To be frank, the basics of magic being taught feel roundabout to me.”

Hearing this, Foar looked at me.

“…What do you mean? No, I understand the meaning. Indeed, your classes are completely different from ours. It’s not just because it’s new magic. The way of thinking about incantations, understanding mechanisms and imagining things are also different. Clearly different from us… And even the presence or absence of incantations…”

To that question, I put my hand on my chin and tilted my head.

“Rather than memorizing magic incantations, I focused on deciphering the magical language used in incantations. Perhaps that’s where the difference lies. Also, the reason I don’t chant when using magic is probably due to my research on magic circles.”

“Magic circles!?”

“…You’ve deciphered magic circles?”

Eliza and Strauss reacted, but Foar continued without paying attention to them.

“That’s the most secret of secret techniques. I’m not asking you to teach it. But I’d like to see it just once. The legendary non-incantation magic.”

I nodded slightly at those words, wondering what I should show.

Well, I might as well show all attributes.

Thinking this, I opened my mouth.

I produced a spear of flame, a sphere of water, a wall of sand, and further, a tiny tornado and lightning strike. Finally, I activated just the form of healing magic.

There’s actually non-attribute magic too, but I omitted it thinking it wouldn’t be useful as a reference since few people use it.

However, it seemed to have quite an impact, as everyone was speechless, staring at me.

“…Teacher Aoi. How far have you mastered magic? Don’t tell me you’ve reached the truth of magic. The depths of sorcery…”

Foar said something strange and looked at me with sharp eyes.

As the classroom was enveloped in silence, I had no choice but to answer.

“It’s difficult to say how far, but if you need a benchmark, I can perform advanced magic of all attributes without incantations. Also, I’ve created original magic for each attribute. However, I don’t think I’ve mastered magic, and I’m still researching.”

Upon saying this, ignoring the murmuring students, Foar continued questioning.

“What more is there to research? What are you aiming for? Even stronger magic?”

Asked as if in disbelief, I shrugged.

“My master is researching teleportation magic that can instantly arrive at a destination. So, I’d like to help with that if possible.”

To tell the truth, I’m researching magic to return to my original world, but I hesitated to say that. So, I mentioned Owen’s research instead.

“…Teleportation. I see, that’s fitting research for you. In fact, it might be magic that only you can develop.”

Foar muttered softly, nodding quietly to himself.

At that moment, the bell signaling the end of class rang.
